Titusville

The first post office was built in Sand Point in 1859, but closed after only a few months.

Years later, confederate Colonel Henry T. Titus arrived in 1867, with the intent to build a town on land owned by his wife, Mary Hopkins Titus.

He laid out roads, and built the Tutus House in 1870, a large 1 story hotel situated next to a saloon. Colonel Titus donated land for 4 churches. He also donated land for a courthouse in a successful effort to make the community the county seat.

Titusville got its name in 1873 when Henry Titus won a dominoes match against Captain Clark Rice to determine which player got to rename the town.

After the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s brought tourist, tourism and citrus dominated the economy.

In 1922 a wooden bridge was built from Titusville to Playalinda Beach.

During World War II, a navy fighter field was established just south of Titusville, which is now known as the Space Coast Regional Airport.

The development of the Space Program in the 1950s brought technological jobs, and a boost to the population and the economy.

The 2000 U. S. Census counted 40,670 people living in Titusville, with a median household income of 35,607.

Titusville has an area of 25.9 square miles in north Brevard County alongside the Indian River Lagoon, and north of Cocoa, Florida.

Titusville has several historical sites and museums, including the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum, the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, the Valiant Air Command Warbirds Museum, and the Windover Archaeological Site.

The Max Brewer Bridge connects Titusville with the Canaveral National Seashore, Playalinda Beach, and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Titusville is just across the river from the Kennedy Space Center, and a short driving distance to Disney and all the Orlando attractions.
