Melbourne Beach

Welcome to "Brevard's Oldest Beach Community"!

Melbourne Beach was established in 1883 by retired Union Major Cyrus E. Graves. He bought about 600 acres of government land which comprise what is now Melbourne Beach.

Pineapples were grown until 1895 when freezing weather wiped out the crops.

For many years the only access from Melbourne Beach to the mainland of Melbourne was via ferry. That changed in 1921 when the Melbourne Causeway spanned the Indian River Lagoon from Melbourne to Indialantic.

Melbourne Beach was incorporated as a town in 1923 with a few hundred residents. The population steadily increased after World War II. In 2000 there were 3,335 people living there with over half of the population over 50 years old.

Melbourne Beach is largely residential with an elementary school, some businesses and many condominiums. The median income for a household is $62,139.

Melbourne Beach is located on a barrier island that separates the Indian River Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. It is just South of Indialantic, and across the Lagoon from Melbourne and Palm Bay.

Points of interest include the Sea Turtle Preservation Society. The Flutie Athletic Complex has a picnic area, community center, playground, tennis courts, soccer, little league fields, a multi-use field and a concession stand. Long Point Park provides riverfront camping, picnic areas, a pavilion, swimming lake, boat ramp and canoe rentals.

Some of the historical buildings include the Community Center - originally the Women's Club. It was built in 1920, and still has the original pine paneling, oak flooring, enclosed bookshelves and two fireplaces. The Ryckman house was built in 1889. Mrs. McCormick's Boarding House, built in 1915 is now a wellness center. The Community Chapel, a popular wedding site was constructed from 1890 to 1892.
