Cape Canaveral
Originally named the Cape of Currents by Ponce De Leon in 1513, Cape Canaveral was not incorporated until 1963.
A 1.9 square mile beach and coastal community, Cape Canaveral is located on the northern top of a barrier island. It is situated between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Banana River Lagoon to the west, and just north of Cocoa Beach. It can be found on the east coast of Florida about midway between Jacksonville and Miami.
The 2005 US Census estimates the population at 10,523. The residents are typically young, mobile and in transition, with median household income of $30,858.
The economy of Cape Canaveral depends largely on tourism.
Port Canaveral is the only deep water port between Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville on the East Coast. It is the second busiest cruise port in the world, with 4.6 million cruise passengers in 2004.
The Kennedy Space Center and Canaveral Air Force Station are located on Cape Canaveral (Just north of the city). Rockets have been launched from Cape Canaveral since the 1950's. The area was chosen because the climate allows for a year-round schedule, and the proximity to the ocean allows for launches over the ocean in case of technical failure.
For recreation, Cape Canaveral residents enjoy outdoor activities and sports, movie theaters, and nightclub.
